Ellenboro House

Our beautiful home is located in Newton-in-Cartmel, a very picturesque area offering a lovely Lake District holiday in one of the quieter parts of the National Park.

Ellenboro House is located in a small hamlet and guests will find numerous walks from the door where you can easily walk to Grange-over-Sands, Cartmel or Newby Bridge.  The walks are steep in places but provide the most beautiful views over Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland Fells.  Some of our favourite local walks include Gummers How, Chapel House Woods and High Dam.  Drive a little further and the Lakeland peaks are there for the taking. We’re under an hour from the likes of Scafell, Helvellyn and Loughrigg.  Other activities in the village include fishing at High Newton Reservoir and cycling around the fells and country lanes. Birdwatchers will also find the area of interest from the tits, finches, sparrows etc. that frequent our own garden and orchard through to the unusual water birds which can be found in Grange-over-Sands park.

Visitors looking to take in some of the Lake District’s attractions will find many almost on our doorstep such as Windermere Lake Cruises, Lakeside to Haverthwaite Steam Railway, Lakeland Motor Museum, Sizergh Castle, Cartmel Priory and Holker Hall.

The area is also excellent for quirky and artisan shopping.  Cartmel Village, the home of sticky toffee pudding is easy to reach by car, foot or bike as is Grange-over-Sands.  Both offer a wealth of local shops including the award winning Higginson’s Butchers, Hazelmere Bakery and Cartmel Cheeses.  Next door to our B&B is Yew Tree Barn, a wonderful shopping experience filled with architectural treasures and gifts.

The B&B is surrounded by some of the best eateries in the Lake District including the famous L’Enclume.  Other great pubs to enjoy dining include: Crown at High Newton, The Masons Arms, The Royal Oak Inn at Cartmel, The Brown Horse at Winster and The Hare & Hounds at Bowland Bridge.  The Crown at High Newton is our most local pub offering excellent dining, fine wines and Cumbrian cask ales.

Drive just a little further and you’ll find an even greater array of shops, restaurants and attractions in the likes of Kendal, Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Hawkshead, Grasmere and Ulverston.
